We really loved learning about "The Titanic". We enjoyed working with our friends to produce some great projects.

Healthy fruit bowls!!
We learned the importance of eating a healthy balanced diet.
We also learned about the food pyramid which we can use to help us make the right choices to keep our bodies healthy.

We enjoyed singing our "Safe Cross Code " song which teaches us the steps to keep us safe as we cross the road.....ALWAYS remember this important code!!

We have learned alot about the beautiful season of Autumn and all the changes that occur in our environment and lives : weather, clothes that we wear, hibernating animals, migrating birds, deciduous trees and leaves and the busy life of the farmer during this harvest season.

Famous Fashion Designers: We really enjoyed making clothes out of different fabrics. As you can see we will have lots of "fahionistas" from this class in a few years!!!!Watch out Coco Chanel!!!

More Talent.......threading and sewing practice!

The children loved making these rice krispie buns but enjoyed eating them more!!!. They made sure to follow the steps of their recipe very carefully.

Buzzing Bees: We did a little project about bees and found out lots of information about these busy creatures!! We are like busy bees in their hive - always working hard and together in room 9!!

"Them bones,them bones need calcium"- we have learned about some of the bones we have in our body, their functions and the importance of keeping our bones healthy and strong.

This is our first year that we have started joint writing.
We really enjoy practicing our new letters but we must remember that "Practice Makes Perfect"!!!

a famous inventor

Another famous man in history that we have learned about so far this year is a man called Thomas Edison.
Thanks to Thomas we have the electric lightbulb!! He was the first man to invent the lightbulb. Other inventors have followed in his footsteps and have invented some very useful things that we could not do without in our lives today!! We will be learning about other famous inventors throughout the school year.
Who knows? Maybe a boy or girl from this class will be a famous inventor in the future. We better get our thinking caps on!!!!

Volcanoes

Popacateptl is a big volcano,far away in Mexico.
Popacateptl goes, popacateptl goes,
Bang........Sizzle Sizzle ......Bang.

This is a short song we learned. It is called "Popacateptl", a volcano in Mexico.
We really enjoy singing this song.
We have added actions and body percussion to this song. We also vary the dynamics and tempo throughtout this song.
At the beginning we crouch down on the floor, singing very softly. Then gradually we rise up (imitating the lava rising in the chamber) and finally erupt!!!!

Columbus Day

Today the 11th of October we celebrated Columbus Day.
Here we remember one of the world's most famous explorer-Christopher Columbus.
We did a mini-project on the life of Columbus and his voyage to the "New World" with his three ships-"The Nina", "The Pinta" and "The Santa Maria".
As well as watching a short video about his life and voyage, we learned a new song called "Columbus".

" In 1842, Columbus sailed on the ocean blue, with the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
He sailed across the ocean, he sailed across the sea,
Until he came to San Salvador"

Autumn

We learned alot about autumn over the last few weeks. We divided our learning into different sections.
Changes and differences between the four seasons.
Changes in plants and animal behaviour.
The swallow and migration.
Hibernation, the hedgehog and the squirrel.
Harvest time ( a busy time for the poor farmer).
The scarecrow.
Deciduous and evergreen trees.

On our autumn walks we observe all the changes in our environment that autumn brings. We collect the falling leaves from sycamore, horse-chestnut, beech and oak trees. We also enjoy eating the delicious ripe fruits such as the apple, strawberry and plum. Yummy!

September was a very busy month in our class. As well as settling back to school after our wonderful summer holidays, we learned alot of new things. The following are a few of the topics that we really enjoyed learning about.

Welcome to Mrs. Gillen's class site. We are in second class. There are 13 boys and 9 girls in our class. It is a very important year for us as we are making our First Holy Communion. We are all really looking forward to this special day. In our class we always do our best and treat others the way we ourselves would like to be treated.
In our site you will be able to see and hear about some of the things we have been leraning about. Hope you enjoy it !!!

Our Christmas Carol Service

At the moment we are practicing very hard for our annual Christmas carol servive.
OnWednesday the 19th of December all classes ( from junior infants to second class) will perform their carols in the Renmore Church. Everyone is very welcome. Hope to see you all there!

The Zebra

"The Zebra Crossing"

The children really enjoyed learning about the zebra. We discussed how the stripes of the zebra are unique and are different to any other zebra.Also we researched about why zebras have stripes and we found that they are used as a camouflage effect to protect them from their predators.
The children then made their own zebra crossing display. We think it looks very effective (but could give you sore eyes if you looked at it too long!)

"Healthy Fruitbowls" and "Autumn Scarecrows".

We learned all about healthy fruits and vegetables and the importance of bringing a healthy lunch in to school.

Scarecrows play an important role in the farmer's field. They scare away the crows and other birds that will eat the farmer's crops.

Baboró

On Tuesday the 16th of October all second classes will be going to the Town Hall theatre to see the Baboró production of the "Corryvreckan". We look forward to it!!!

Welcome back boys and girls! Hope you all had a great summer.
This year there are 14 boys and 8 girls in our 2nd class. It's a very important year as you will be receiving your First Holy Communion in May 2008 and I am looking forward to doing many fun and interesting lessons/activities with all of you this year!!

Our School Tour

My class went to the "Let's Go Summer Camp" in NUIG on Friday the 1st 2007. The children enjoyed a range of activities-abseiling, orienteering, bungee-trampolining, human soccer, inflatable obstacle course etc..
Every child enjoyed it thoroughly and can't wait to go back!!!!!!
